Mumbengegwi made the comment at the ANC’s 54th elective conference in Nasrec, Johannesburg.

Zanu PF, which recently saw a leadership change itself when the army forced Robert Mugabe to quit, had a warm message of support for the ANC.

Mumbengegwi thanked the South African Development Corporation (Sadc), which South Africa chairs, for its role in the Zimbabwean “succession issue”.

The Minister of State for Presidential Affairs told ANC delegates, half of which had already left the stage, the so-called Operation Restore Legacy mission was meant to rescue the legacy of Zanu PF.

Mumbengegwi added the move was not targeting Mugabe.

South African President Jacob Zuma, on behalf of the Sadc, sent envoys to Zimbabwe, who were part of the negotiations which led to Mugabe’s forced resignation following a millitary coup.
