Tsvangirai has done his part, should retire

Debate is now raging on whether MDC-T leader, Morgan Tsvangirai is helping the opposition case or now a curse.

By Pardon Maguta,Our Reporter

Without doubt, no political history of Zimbabwe can be complete without the mention of Tsvangirai’s name.

Rising from the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Union to unite people around MDC, Tsvangirai indeed shook the political establishment.

He helped the opposition case. The climax of political exploitation was reached when he defeated former President Robert Mugabe in the first round of the 2008 presidential polls to force a run-off.

Since then, a devastating defeat in the 2013 polls, coupled with a second split of his party, seemed to confirm that Tsvangirai was turning from being an asset to a liability in the opposition circles.

He is no longer helping the opposition case, but has become a curse himself. Unfortunately a cancer attack is now inhibiting him from discharging his duties as MDC-T and MDC Alliance leader, and this is a cause for concern among pro-democracy forces.

No one is happy that he is ill. But the truth is, it is necessary that the man allows leadership renewal in his party.

Love or loathe them, Zanu PF’s moves to reform and renew its presidium by ditching Mugabe have the potential of working negatively to the opposition.

Tsvangirai has done a commendable job of moulding an alliance, but he must do the honourable thing of allowing a fit, energetic, strong and robust character to head the alliance, while he plays a supporting role.

If Tsvangirai can take this route and root the opposition to victory powered by his advice, he will go down in history as the all-time political great of our country.

  1. That remains the fact,we beg Tsvangirai to retire, its time up;he shld not show us his Mugabe side-overstaying!Inga in America they change leaders all the time.Thatz the democracy he parports to represent;shld we again engage the ZDF as in the Mugabe case?

      1. Good question.

    1. yuwiii you seem o have lost memory of that man’s contribution to this country before he test the pudding you want him to retire for what pane asingagwari here nhai can you not see that half the team in government is very old and sick whats the difference na RMT OUR god will soon heal him thnk you

  2. The fact of the matter is they is no such debate in the country that Morgan must step down it is just wishful thinking of zanu supporters who are visibly scared of defeat by the opposition led by Morgan next year . The man is staying put , He had been winning since 2000 but election were rigged so it will be fool hard to say he is a curse to the opposition . Where he is sick or health we want him to complete what he started then he can go rest after that . Mind you Zimbabweans are not like mgodoyi the dog that just follow everyone . One leader at a team which means at this time its Morgan leading the opposition .

    1. Like me or hate me. I will not put my vote on another dictator like Tsvangirai again. I learnt my lesson from Mugabe. He may win but without my vote, that way I wont carry the guilt of having contributed to the election of a dictator a brainless one for that matter coz if had brains he would have passed the button by now and not ammend the MDC consitution so he can stay in power.

We need to recircle leaders and with the current health that is boggling him ,he is incapacitated like Mugabe .he should call it quits and give space to others.Yes has done his part in calling for ruinous sanctions in 2000 to his advantage why is he calling referees from outside to oversee our match or elections. What type of reforms does he want in our elections.More so why does he dispatched an opposition to the Senate in America.Such elections have no place in Zimbabwe.Their intentions are well known to cause mayhem to our masses.awhy cry fowl before elections are held.Election are won through the ballot box no going to America.

  4. Actually Zanu Pf needs to reform, rather than focusing on transforming peoples lifes, they now want our strongest foot forward to vanquish from the playing field, hell no Tsvangirai will only leave after a term as president of the Republic of Zimbabwe

  13. It only shows that the majority of the people want to talk loud of next door peoples problems, as if its over with their family problems. The political geography in Zimbabwe since 1999, “many people tend to ignore the major grey areas, where Zanu like a chameleon has changed colours to suit its habitat to catch its prey, in this case the suffering majority. Who told you that Tsvangi want to cling to power like yr ancestors in Zanu. Who makes you the best advisor of the opposition. Under free elections, with Barrack polling stations, rural polling stations completely depoliticised, without military personel eying the electorate like hawks TM, is able to score 76 of the vote. Know modern Zim politics before you ink down yr Squelin opinions, come May next the whole hurricane will be in favour of the opposition whether you like it or not.

    1. Tsholotsho, Im happy you are from Tsholotsho. Lets face the facts, democracy should be practical everywhere. You dont wait until you win elections then you start practicing it. Mugabe felt he owned Zanu PF and Zimbabwe. For this reason, he felt there was noone who could lead Zimbabwe like him. Because of this he didnt want to step down and let others take over. The same thing is happening at MDC-T. If Morgan took MDC as a political party, owing to his health condition, he would have groomed someone early enough for the coming elections. Now people may think he wont lead for the whole term if he wins. When that time comes, who takes over and what happens? Voters would be sceptic. Its time for him to walk the talk and step down if he isn’t another Mugabe. There is no Zanu agent saying anything here. As things stand niw, Zanu PF will win next year resoundingly because tgere is no opposition. Other oppostion parties spend more time firing each other because they are power mongers.

  14. We want Tsvangirai to do the Nelson Mandela way full stop. Why are zanus complaining about Morgan when they had been stitching and zipping their rotten mouth and minds towards zanu pf’s 37 years of destructing our country.People with evil and shallow minds sees bad things as good and good things as bad. If it is your stupid ideology ,then Rhosedia was the best.Stupid idiots.

    1. Why would zanu pf of all the pple be worried about the leadership of mdc ,you guys are cry babies who always want to blame everyone for your perrenial failures.

    2. Sandy, beware if calling others stupid idiots. Only stupid idiots dont take other views than theirs. Not all those commenting here are Zanu. I for one see things from a neutral point of view. Mentioning Mandela, how many leaders did the ANC has before Mandela. In SA, think of parties like IFP, COPE, etc. Noone will ever take those parties seriously because of how they are run. Dies it mean that the MDC doesn’t have faith on its members? Who becomes stupid then?

  15. zvima diehards zva Tsvangirai ngazvitibvire, Tsvangirai is not Zimbabwe;Mugabe wangovawo nazvowo wani zvima diehards izvozvi.Asi zvingori zvitatu hazvikwanisi ku muhwinisa Tsvangirai wacho save only to speculate that elections are rigged every year while ignoring true facts on the ground.ko inga Chiluba ku Zambia wakango hwina ka one wani! Those with real support win even where there is no level plain field;however itz true intimidation& rural chiefs activity has bn witnessed in some rural areas by zanu pf against the opposition & also counter attack by the opposition itself.Itz also true that Tsvangirai’s urban support is also declining bec of his undemocratic tendencies of clinging to power

  17. Morgan Tsvangirai is real opposition candidate for 2018 election to send ED packing and his Zanu pf. Mugabe’s CIO had tried for many years to destroy Mdc hence the formation of many mdc s. But look only MDC T is still relevant comparing to other small small mdc s formed by people hungry for power. Tendai biti thought he was a big man only to find out he is actually nothing without Tsvangirai. So Morgan is more. Lets Give him the last chance. If he wins election, he can appoint someone to finish his term of presidency if his ill health handicaps him. If he is fit to complete his term he can do so. May be, i suggest that he only needs one term as president of the republic of Zimbabwe then he can retire like bob. Those in mdc T who are not patient enough with tsvangirai and are hungry to be called party presidents let them leave mdc T and form their own political parties like what biti did and many other who once were with Tsvangirai. Mention them one by one , they are all now irrelevant. Morgan is more! If people like tendai Biti had remain humble enough in mdc T, one day he would become the president of Zimbabwe after the retirement of Tsvangirai but as it is with the formation of his own party if he is not careful enough this might be the end of his political life/career. If biti contest for being an MP he might loose to MDC t candidate. So may i urge Mdc T vice presidents i.e. Chamisa, mudzuri and khupe to humble yourselves or else you become like Biti. But by humbling yourself, one day, at the fullness of time u will become Mdc T president and president of Zimbabwe. After all no one lives here on earth forever. To be sick doesn’t mean death. To be very health doesn’t guarantee long life on earth. There are many people reading this who are very healthy but who knows you might die before Tsvangirai dies whom you think is sick. To be someone’s junior doesn’t mean you will takeover from your boss after he dies. You might die too before your boss dies. E.g. Mugabe’s juniors like muzenda, Joshua nkomo, john nkomo and Joseph msika all died leaving their boss in office and has out lived them all and is still alive regardless of his ill healthy widely spoken about. Who knows Tsvangirai might as well out lived his deputies though sick. This is a good fact!

    1. Call me whatever name. i will not vote for any dictator like Tsvangirai, a brainless one for that matter coz if he had brains he would haved passed on the button to more capable people of which the MDC is not short of. I will not carry the guilt of having him as president. My vote maybe just 1 but I am not givng it to someone simply because he stood up against mugabe, I will give it to someone who can deliver. its time I start doing things the right way and not be led by emotion but by facts and true judgement.

  18. I think those who are saying Tsvangirayi must leave are being disingenuous. They must actually call for Mnangagwa to go because he has been in there for 37 years plus. Moreso, Mnangagwa is 10 years older than Tsvangirayi. If its about illness, anyone can become ill or die anytime. It seems people who are writing are hired to cause chaos in the MDC. Chaos is in ZANU Pf not in MDC.

  29. I hope the writer is a genuine MDC supporter, but I think otherwise. The major threat to Evil Zano and its the final downfall is non other than MT, hence the encouragement to retire.
If MT retires as proposed who takes over? Chamisa, Khupe, Ncube, Mudzuri? You would only create confusion and in-fights at this juncture, and disaster leading to elections.
Chamisa could be ideal but on what basis does he become the President…he was never elected, but is there courtesy of Tsvangirai. Khupe is allergic to “alliance” hence unsuitable.

Save is 10 years younger than the current President and cancer can be be cured. Even if he is to die from it, let us give him a good send off with land slide victory(73%) which he has been cheated of.

    1. Tsuro, if he dies after, what hapoens tgen? What would stop infighting?

  30. The fact remains – MT is currently the only person active in Zim politics who gathered more votes than RGM. Anyone is free to air their opinion but it will not change that fact. Working on numbers (even after rigging) no one has ever been freely endorsed by voters more than this man.

Whether he can be, or will be, a great leader is something else. Putting someone else instead of him is an experiment without control. Those who want him out have never voted for him and are afraid their heroes will be white-washed in the next elections provided intimidation, murder, extortion and torture are absent and all electoral laws are aligned to the current constitution. MDC has made it clear they don’t want to get into office on top of dead bodies and right now even those who broke away from MDC-T have realised this fact and have put their faith in MT. I doubt that after economic battering for 37 years, only 8 months will be enough to reverse the damage caused through omission or commission by the same players, no.

  31. ED is correcting the economy, like it or not. The economy campaigned for MDC-T and nothing further than that. ZIDERA is the brainchild of MDC and these sanctions have not worked to remove R.G and hence when H.E Pres. of Zimbabwe Emmerson Dambudzo Munangagwa rectifies the meltdown you will have no argument about the demise of MDC. Those in cahoots with MDC continuously deny the existence of sanctions, power struggles in the party and still live on the assumption that MDC commands the most support. Masses can easily be swayed away from MDC like that saturday solidarity march that was organised by the WVA. No wonder why Morgan had to organise his the following day and guess what…it was a pultry crowd. Why he did that…seeking relevance. Muchangovukura, mogovukuruka, muchingovukura. Wake up and smell the coffee.

  32. Newsday just another Herald. Refusing to publish opinions not in line with your biased articles while pretending to be advocates of free speech

  33. When did Newsday reporters ever have the best interest of the MDC at heart? Just stick to reporting without bias. getting caught up in Trevor Ncube’s brand of activism has seriously soiled your publications’ name and reputation. In any case he’s tried to remove Tsvangirai and failed the past 15 years. He ought to give it a rest and comfort his many failed candidates in quiet

  34. Is this a news article or an opinion piece/

  35. save will retire, no questions about that. lets not cause confusion. mdc are playing their cards close to the chest. they are not moved by emotions. they are so focused that even analylists cant see what they are up to. lets not talk for them. at present they are saying nothing just like mnangagwa before he took over. the press says things they have not said. they write unknown people’s comments and say its mdc. lets wait. when they are ready they will talk.

  36. It’s called free speech people. Author stated his opinion. Disagreeing with him is all well and good but some of the comments now being seen here seem to idolize Morgan not as the face of opposition but the only person who can lead the opposition. Ndiwo matangiro akaita Bob iwawo, when individuals start believing one person and his clique are bigger than the institutions and only they can run it

  39. MDC defeated Mugabe in 2008 because of bhora musango by disgruntled Zanu members. Its suicidal to gauge MT’s popularity on that basis.A lot has changed from 2008 to 2017 its time the opposition change their strategy.Denial will make their ship sink further

  40. Morgan Tsvangirai is our President going into elections. And one’s opinion amplified here as a people’s view will not change that. This is the very scared Zanu PF. Zimbabweans will stand with Tsvangirai and that’s what is going to happen. And we will campaign for him vigorously no matter attempts to weaken the opposition. Mugabe himself argued to give power to MT when the generals pointed guns on him. So let us be very alert cadres. MT is the ultimate hero.

  41. MUGABE was popular in the 80s and 90s.They were people who didn’t want to go.I remember people singing “a Mugabe tamirira one party state”.The majority can mean fools.Look at Mongosutu butulezi. He formed his political party in 1979 and had been the leader ever since.Look at DA, a white party and so democratic. What’s wrong with blacks.I commend the Anc.So democratic. We loved Mugabe until he became a curse due to old age.

    1. so if Mugabe was still a bit younger the confused and gullible would still say pamberi naye???

Not me! in 37 years we should have made so much progress. Mugabe killed our agriculture the mainstay of our economy just to retain power. Honestly how can a sane person destroy the foundation of his own house?

  42. Who ever is calling for Tsvangirai to retire is a ZANU PF. they want to rig 2018 elections, the junta thinks that we are not reading between the script. Tsvangirai has won the past Zim elections but the junta behind curtains tweeked the election results. So therfore Tsvangirai must be given his term to rule this country all those rulling this country are illigitimate, full stop.

  43. It’s people like@ Young Mike with an intellectual disability and coupled with mental dysfunctional syndrome who have nothing positive or productive to offer to his country!

Talk about retrogressive mind talk about that guy Mike whatever the big fool.

    Nxaaaa

Mike please do an introspection of your mental sanity.

Vote Zanu out for a better prosperous and more democratic free Zimbabwe.

  44. Tsvangirai should make way for young blood like Chamisa. He is not well. A lot of other people stood against Mugabe that does not qualify them to be in the State House. Unfortunately we have such a dearth in leadership in Zimbabwe (Africa) we fall for anything. Tsvangirai is too shallow to lead Zimbabwe in this era. We need visionary leadership. Zanu PF is busy rebranding and will regain some of the opposition support come 2018 (the opposition support numbers will never pick as Tsvangirayi in his hey days). MDC will continue crying foul while ZANU PF recovers lost ground. Mari iri kutaura, hezvo Madhuku odya pana Chombo

  45. Tsvangirai should take power, mnangagwa is too old.Tabona Jopi frm Botswana

  46. Comment…I will vote for anyone who says NO TO HOMOSEXUALS in capital letters

  47. Due to his health condition, it is advisable that Tsvangirai steps down and hand over to someone else

  48. Comment…
All we need is Tsvangson name which is sellable even if he is asleep. Prozanus are calling to step down at this crucial time. We the supported want him , whether healthy or not, or dead.

  49. wani he is grooming Chamisa, stop popotaring like the ungraceful Grace Gucci

  50. I lost respect for Morgan first time the MDC split & become ultra weak. SInce then it has been a shadow of its former when in full strength. Democracratic principles also include leadership renewal and regular interbvals not party capture. Mugabe captured Zanupf on the back of huge popularity, so is Morgan, he may be popular yes but what about renewal. A party that doesnt renew its leadership will stagnate, everybody has changed at MDC except Morgan. Now hill ill-helath is making people reconsider him…..NO, its overstaying at the top that wrong not illhealth. What confidence do you inspire that when you become state president you will not overstay also on the back of popularity. Popular or not …a leader must allow renewal…period.

  51. Comment…munopenga sagire. Vana ED vane 37 years vachingotonga vachingotonga vachingotooonga. Imi ndipo pamunoti morgen achienda iye asati atonga. munopenga.

  52. Viva Junta, vote vote democracy democracy he he he ukuthini lapa ?

  53. NOW THAT YOUR RAINS HAVE ARRIVED,PLANT,PLANT, PLANT. BUGGER MUGABE CONSTITUTION
REMOVE THE 14 FARMS MUGABE OWNS
LET HIM REMAIN IN HIS RESIDENCE UNTIL HE DIES THEN TURN IT INTO ANOTHER HOTEL
    ON THE HARARE MARKET

  54. MORGAN PANYANGA…KUPUSISWA KWATRI KUDA KUITWA NEZANU PF

KUDA KUT BHAIZISA DRAMA RAVO RAVAKAGADZIRA MUNA NOVEMBER KUITRA KUT VAHWINE THIS COMING ELECTION…MDC NDOPANE CHIVIMBO CHENEW ZIM

  55. Every institution in Zimbabwe must reform or renew, political parties included.ZANU PF continues to recycle people with a long history of gross incompetence and corruption, something which has kept Zimbabweans suffering.Opposition parties must rejuvinate and that includes leadership renewal, adoption of new strategies and more. The Mugabe must go mantra is now a thing of the past and the opposition must now become relevant to the current dispensation or they risk losing the elections yet again.Institutional success must be put ahead of everything else. This is something Zanu Pf has realised.A political party is not made up of an individual. In the case of MDC-T leadership renewal is needed and that is a fact.Morgan Tsvangirai remains one of the most outstanding political figures,a man who sacrificed a lot for this country. It has been 18 years with Tsvangirai at he helm of MDC T.Surely i expect him to call for an extra ordinary congress for the election of a new leadership and then support the new leaders ahead of the 2018 harmonised elections.
