Speaking at a handover ceremony at Centenary Park, councillor Earnest Rafemoyo, on behalf of the mayor Martin Moyo, said the donation came at a time council was carrying out tree replacement programme.

“These 2 030 seedlings will go a long way in helping us achieve the aims of the programme to replace old trees. While today we plant a ceremonial number of trees, over the next weeks, we will be planting trees along various roads such as Matopos Road, Airport Road, among others.

“It is my hope that we will protect the trees and ensure they grow to give us the much-needed environment impact,” he said.

Speaking at the same ceremony, Telone regional business unit head, Wing Sibanda said the company continues to explore avenues to improve its relations with communities.

“Our latest initiative Plant a Tree is based on tenets gleaned from the environmental impact assessments conducted for our projects and operations. We are encouraged to step up and play our part in restoration of the environment through the planting of tree to mitigate the harm inflicted on some forests by society.

“It is as a result of this project that we are gathered here. This year alone we are planting 50 000 trees throughout the country,” he said.

He said they were indebted to the City of Bulawayo for agreeing to be a partner in planting the trees.

“We are proud to be allowed to contribute to the adornment of our great city with these life-enhancing ornaments. More important though is the environment and husbandry that the city will provide through its parks department which is to critical in ensuring the success of this initiative,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company also donated bins to the city.

Councillor Lillian Mlilo, who read a speech on behalf of the mayor Moyo, said: “The city is striving towards a zero littering society and this cannot be attained unless residents co-operate with the council. We will make Bulawayo the cleanest city in the region.”

Acting town clerk, Sikhangele Zhou, said the bins will go a long way in covering the gap in that particular service.

“We are now on 60% coverage of refuse bins in the central business district and we left with 40% to be covered. As people of Bulawayo you are urged throw litter in the provided bins, not on roads and pavements.”
