Mnangagwa said he had delayed the appointment of VPs with some few days because there were some institutions involved.

Rugeje’s appointment stretched the number of securocrats in Mnangagwa’s politburo to three following the appointment of Air Marshal Perrance Shiri and Major General Sibusiso Moyo.

Mnangagwa made the changes in his closing remarks yesterday after the meeting ratified his appointment to the post of party and government president.

He was filling positions left vacant by the expulsion of party members aligned to the G40 faction in the race to succeed former President Robert Mugabe before the military intervened under Operation Restore Legacy.

Environment minister Oppah Muchinguri became the first female party chairperson while Obert Mpofu was promoted to secretary for administration, to become the fifth-ranked in Zanu PF while Chinamasa was moved from justice to finance.

Prior to Rugeje’s ascendancy, former Local Government minister Saviour Kasukuwere was the secretary for commissariat.

Local Government minister July Moyo was elevated from his deputy secretary for administration position to secretary for transport. Paul Mangwana replaced Chinamasa as secretary for justice and will be deputised by former Justice deputy minister Fortune Chasi.

Mabel Chinomona, who was fired by former First Lady and women’s league boss Grace Mugabe, bounced back. She took over from her former boss as the new women’s league secretary. Pupurai Togarepi, who was fired during the dominance of G40 and replaced by Kudzanai Chipanga, bounced back as substantive secretary for youth affairs.

War veteran Victor Matemadanda is the new secretary for war veterans, taking over from Sydney Sekeramayi, who was touted by G40 as Mugabe’s shoo-in.

Zanu PF chief whip Lovemore Matuke is the new secretary for defence, previously held by Defence minister Kembo Mohadi, who is tipped to become Vice-President alongside Zimbabwe Defence Forces Commander General Constantino Chiwenga.

War veterans boss Christopher Mutsvangwa took over from former Higher Education minister Jonathan Moyo as secretary for science and technology

Former director of commissariat Munyaradzi Machacha was appointed the new boss of the Herbert Chitepo Ideological College and will also be a politburo member.

“Some of the appointments like deputy positions will be done in a few days,” Mnangagwa said.

Before his appointments, Mnangagwa said his government was seized with the cash situation in the country and was working expeditiously to resolve it.

“My government is committed to solving the structural problems that have caused this problem,” Mnangagwa said.

He urged retailers to desist from wantonly hiking prices, saying they should have the people at heart.

Mnangagwa also promised to put to an end the era of land barons and illegal settlements in his speech where he also warned party members against hiding under Zanu PF’s name to engage in corrupt activities.

“The party should not be a haven of corrupt people,” Mnangagwa said, adding that the land reform was non-negotiable and would focus all his energy on reviving the economy.
