On Friday, the accused Elias Tembo (35) briefly appeared before Karoi magistrate Sheila Nazombe, facing three counts of poaching, entering the country through an undesignated point and illegal possession of a .458 rifle.

He was not asked to plead and remanded to November 24.

It is the State case that Tembo of Chirundu Compound in Zambia, teamed up with his three alleged accomplices, two of them still at large, while the fourth was shot dead on contact with the rangers, and entered the country through an undesignated point using a dugout canoe on November 8.

They were intercepted by ZimParks rangers, who had laid an ambush, resulting in a heavy exchange of gunfire.

One of the suspects only identified as Clifford died on the spot, while Tembo sustained multiple injuries, leading to his capture as the other two fled the scene.
