THE Makoni Rural District Council says it has completed construction of Chimwanenzou Bridge which links Headlands and Makoni North constituencies, bringing relief to local farmers who have been struggling to transport their produce to the nearest market centres.

The bridge was swept by heavy rains five years ago, effectively cutting off trade among villagers from the two constituencies.

Council’s chief executive officer Guy Mutasa told NewsDay at the weekend that the bridge, built at a cost of $35 000, would be commissioned soon.

He said the project was funded by the Zimbabwe National Road Administration.

“Our engineers helped in the construction of the bridge which joins Makoni North constituency and Headlands. This is a major boost to local farmers who were struggling to transport their produce, particularly tobacco,” Mutasa said.

“All along, we have been using a makeshift bridge, but it was impassable during the rainy season.”
