Mnangagwa faces treason charge

PRESIDENT Robert Mugabe could lay treason charges against his former deputy, Emmerson Mnangagwa , who slipped out of the country on Tuesday following his expulsion, on allegations of undermining the 93-year-old Zanu PF leader, NewsDay heard yesterday.

Stung by Mnangagwa’s statement that he was coming for Mugabe and his family, top government sources yesterday told NewsDay, the former Vice-President could alternatively be charged with conspiracy to overthrow a constitutionally-elected government.

The sources said the treason charge emanated from the stinging statement Mnangagwa issued from his new base in South Africa on Wednesday where he threatened to return home in a few weeks’ time to take control of all levers of power from Mugabe.

A treason charge attracts a death sentence or life in prison. Mugabe recently indicated that he wanted a rethink on the reintroduction of the death penalty to deal with deviants.

Information minister Simon Khaya Moyo yesterday confirmed that various arms of the State were studying Mnangagwa’s statement, saying an announcement on the appropriate action would be made “shortly”.

“We have seen the statement from ED Mnangagwa which is being carefully examined and appropriate response and action will be made afterwards,” Khaya Moyo said.

On Wednesday, the former Vice-President, who was fired from both government and Zanu PF on allegations of disloyalty, deceitfulness and ineptitude, warned that Mugabe’s days in power were numbered.

NewsDay heard that Mugabe was briefed of the statements while chairing an emergency politburo meeting and later directed State security agents to analyse the document with a view to preferring criminal charges against his former deputy.

“So far, paragraphs that are treasonous in nature are these; ‘as I leave this post for now I encourage all loyal members of the party to remain in the party to register to vote as we will very soon control the levers of power in our beautiful party and country.’ What does he mean and what are his intentions?” a government source close to the investigations, queried.

The other part of the statement which reportedly unsettled Mugabe read: “You (Mugabe) and your cohorts will instead leave Zanu PF by the will of the people and this we will do in the coming weeks as Zimbabweans in general now require new progressive leadership that is not resident in the past and refuses to accept change. Fellow Zimbabweans and specifically members of Zanu PF, the time is now to say NO to demi-gods and people that are self-centred and only think of themselves and their families.”

The sources said Mugabe got angry at being labelled a “self-centred demi-god”.

“Yes, the Constitution provides for the freedom of expression, but it does not provide for freedom to insult the President or undermine his authority,” the source said.

The other politicians who were accused of treason were former Vice-President Joice Mujuru, former Zanu PF heavyweights Rugare Gumbo, Didymus Mutasa and Nicholas Goche. They were accused of conspiring to overthrow Mugabe in 2014. The quartet is yet to be arrested and formally charged.

At one time, MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai had the same charge levelled against him, but was acquitted for lack of evidence.
University of Zimbabwe political science lecturer, Eldred Masunungure, however, said that although Mnangagwa’s ouster would weaken Zanu PF ahead of next year’s polls, it would not pose a serious threat to national security.

“He is not the first person to be expelled from Zanu PF and from the look of things; his departure has short-term effects. The issue of unity and tribal politics might be topical now but at some stage, due to lack of a clear and vibrant opposition, it will count to nothing,” Masunungure said.

“President Mugabe knows his ability and strength, his ouster does not pose a serious threat to his rule, it is not something that he can lose sleep about, no.”

  1. Frank speaking, you guys are now afraid, you are going through sleepless nights; instead yekusimbisana just come up with strategies of giving back the country to its owners who happened to be the majority not Zanu PF. Yes it might be threats that mnangagwa is coming back for you but you are not even sure thus the point, this guy knows you in and out at the same time you know him and his capacities as well so save use and give up this silly game of power.

  2. thats the way to go vp keep raising the tempo sooner or later the man will be ruling and running scared with nowhere to hide

  3. Hoyo waenda muchivona!

  4. wastin of time VP. Garai maenda nguva iripo. ende hapana zvamungadiite ini R.g ende hapa hapana na jesu hapana

  5. kana ukarota uchitonga nyika ino ,muka ubike doro woti mudzimu nyandirasha

  6. Munangagwa is now history. Dindingwe rinonaka richikwevw rimwe kana rokwehwa roti mavara aro azara ivhu.Munangagwa looted all the riches in Midlands. This is the money he is using now. Lets not be used by this ruthless idiot. Civil servants in Midlands are now liberated. July and Muda Owen must be arrested for deaths they caused in Kwekwe behind the name of Munangagwa

  7. Mugabe is always talking about people wanting to kill him,but how many people did he killed in order for him to be a president today in zimbabwe? Why is treason charges always a weapon for him against anyone who is exposing his evilness? Please Zimbabwean people, let us be united and chase away Mugabe and his demons.Definitely to say the truth, Mugabe’s life is not even worthy a cent.If Zanu pf and its evil spirits were put there by the people in 1980,then why can’t we fight to remove these stogies? There are so many many ways of killing a cat rather than fearing Mugabe and his security systems.

  8. …who said the communique that is being referred to is in indeed from the former V.P. Surely we can not analyse statements of documents and or messages sent via social media…
..what if the message is from from another ED’s sympathiser and not the real ED..

    1. I like your analysis and look of things……l am suporised that varume vakuru, vanozviti vakadzidza….chose to be troubled by a mere statement extracted from social media…….without the knowledge of the real author. Prof Jonso is Mnangagwa’s real public enemy, thus public knowledge, what if he is the one who drafted and circulated the document….? just to fix Ngwena.
      thus pathetic

      1. That’s why SK said they are analyzing it after which they will make a statement

    2. who cares….Mnangagwa is Mugabe …. Mugabe is Mnangagwa same thing…. who cares

  9. What treason? ED is encouraging people to register to vote. Is it treasonous to remove an incumbent through the ballot. Musade kutivhundusira apa

  10. I’m not a lawyer but I certainly can’t see anything treasonous in Mnangagwa’s statement, what waste of time & energy as usual

  11. The difference is the same, whether he or him, they are all not doing us any good.

  12. kudya kuno zipa breakfast

  13. kudya kuno zipa breakfast ED remember 2008 elections, Tsvangrai won bt yu wrestled the votes fo a rerun now wer are you now Mnangagwa . Mwari vanoona kudenga variko

  14. Nothing treasonous in his speech at all! This man does however have the advantage of knowing every dark and dirty secret and the criminal actions that Zanu PF and its leadership are guilty of right from the beginning and this will all be exposed and made public! Personally I think that he was the cornerstone that has now been removed and the rest will crumble and fall into destruction.

    1. And if he has those capabilities why run away from “people after his life” or ” making death threats” when he should have easily launched a pre-emptive strike or made a counter move?

  15. The statement is just from someone humiliated. Why promise in a few weeks time because if nothing happens then he will look foolish. ED is history, they should just leave him alone.

    1. kkkkk. they are not stupid these guys. they know Ngwena more than we ordinary citizens know.but they dont have evidence and knowledge of his tactics. so ths z a way yekudenha nayo…….for Ngwena to come out and say somethng.

they now know that their future is bleak bcoz Ngwena is capable of doing anything. he can keep quiet and went for good OR he can bounce back thru other lawful/unlawful means

      1. Keep on praying for heavenly peace and love that comes through Jesus Christ for our nation of Zimbabwe and the world.

God says in the book of Isaiah, For I know the plans I have for you, for good future and hope.

If you read John 9 vs 10-11 Jesus clearly shows that, anything said by anyone regardless of who you are as long it is not from heavenly God has no authority over you even if it means death.

But it needs to find you in a non offensive heart state. By this you can then get back your life on the coming of Jesus Christ.

Lets all soldier on with our Christ. stay blessed in Jesus Christ name

  16. Freedom time has come

let the war begin, for that’s where the solution of Zimbabwe’s liberation lies. elections, elections, what elections which we all know Mugabe is set to “win” through manipulation of mostly the rural vote. ive said it before and I will say it again. the delusion of Zimbabweans really amazes me. you attack the person who is set to liberate you in not so distant a future, something you failed to do in the last two decades? Zimbos, please set your selfish agendas aside and rally behind this man for what he is about to achieve is what we all have been waiting for-Our freedom from an evil dictatorship!!!! stop fighting your deliverance, remember the story of how Saul who persecuted Jesus’ followers became Paul the masterful anchor man of the of Christ Jesus’ Gospel.

    1. mugabe and ngwena same same…..even if he is to come back to fight mugabe it won’t change anything …..we want mugabe and his zanu to be removed yes but to allow ngwena to lead us nooooo

  17. this is a serious chess match Zanu-pf should now strategies

  19. True, thisz not treasonous at all but a mere political statement.Treason goes with real plans blended by some partial & unsuccessful action proven to be undertaken not sanctioned under law.Mugabe is open to criticism,a president is not a king with power or authority unto himself but a mere representative of the people who may recall his status at n time within the provisions laws of the country

    1. And moreover he is talking of Zanu pf. Is taking over the reigns of a political party tresonous? Please let the Concourt conclude the case of MDC-T Douglas Mwonzora related to the same issue so as to distiguish…..the so called, say T Biti the person and T. Biti the Finance Minister…. Am not a Lawyer but require clarity on this issue period, unless one talks of the Office of The President and/or the President of the Republic. Views accepted and thus how we learn.

  20. ‘as I leave this post for now I encourage all loyal members of the party to remain in the party to register to vote as we will very soon control the levers of power in our beautiful party and country.’……….this statement is not treasonous at all bcoz at first he is encouraging evry1 to vote…then control the levers of power after pples votes…the other statement reads “You (Mugabe) and your cohorts will instead leave Zanu PF by the will of the people””…here he said by the “will of people” not by his will….

  21. If only you knew that ED and Dabengwa are the masters of intelligence in Zim, you wouldnt be undermining that old man. They tried to stop him from leaving the country but akazongobuda wani?

  22. Unconquerable Chibaba

I will not shed a tear for a man who masterminded the 2008 killings. We all know that Mugabe had accepted defeat but Mnangagwa made sure he retained the presidency by crook. Mnangagwa did it for selfish reasons. He thought Mugabe was going to die sooner and he was going to takeover hence he felt that once Tsvangirayi takes over, it was going to be difficult for him to become the next president. Zvaiwana ngwarati. By now Zimbabwe should have been brought back to the good old days. He is the author of our troubles. He can go to Hell and come back I for one do not care.

    1. You are lying, you crazy “Unconquerable Chibaba”, Tsvangirai failed to garner the necessary 50% +1 of the votes. This was confirmed by then election agents of different political parties. For a free information; results are published at the command center after verification and endorsement of the same by competent political election agents from various political parties.
Tsvangirai’s lame excuse of claiming rigging is just, but a diversion of attention to his gullible followers.

I challenge Tsvangirai and MDC-Alliance to boycott the forthcoming Election 2018, if indeed Zanu P.F. is in the habit of rigging.
It is very simple; Zanu P.F has a majority of followers and unmatched organizational capacity and skill.

      1. Wezhira PaMasvingo

saka zvinoda 6 wks here kuona kuti munhu haana kusvitsa 50%+1 inga rerun results were anounced the day after elections

      2. Knowing that you are a human being who is prone to gullibility makes me feel comforted that even with this flawed analysis of what transpired in 2008 there is still hope fir the real truth to come out one day. The whole world knows that 2008 was a shame and in fact that was when the seeds of the undoing of Zanu were sown.

  23. kwaingova kukuchidzira moto. suspected loyalists will feel the heat.

    1. Comment…Gentlemen and all citizens of this beautiful country. An adage says: set a thief to catch a thief. ED is the right thief to stop this nonsense of a dynasty. He has played the political date game with sekuru and has protected sekuru after his battering by MDC in 2008. Just go over his CV and you will see he has sent shivers down the spine of Grace. Don’t worry about Mugabe he is only responding to what he has been told by the silly ambitious wife and without scrutinizing for finer details sekuru goes hysterical.
