Kusile RDC chief executive officer Christopher Chuma yesterday told Southern Eye that the rehabilitation of the graves would go a long way in marketing the district as a tourist destination.

The place was recently declared a national monument and construction of a memorial site is already underway as a way of preserving the history of the First Chimurenga.

“We want this programme to move very fast and for the place to be developed into a tourist attraction just like Matopos and Victoria Falls. We have plans to develop this place further by putting cooking places, rest rooms and lodges so that local people will get employment,” Chuma said.

Local villagers also commended the move saying the site would put their district on the international map.

Former councillor Cont Mhlanga said there were 14 other unmarked mass graves in the area which should be identified and preserved.
