Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services minister, Supa Mandiwanzira urged Zimbabweans to embrace mobile money, saying the world had become a cashless society.

“The world over the demand for cash transactions is going down and there are growing calls for cash light communities thus the room for mobile money. As government, we urge Zimbabweans to embrace mobile money as it has become the trend globally,” Mandiwanzira said in a speech read on his behalf by the permanent secretary in his ministry, Sam Kundishora.

“OneMoney will not only deliver the much-needed competition in mobile money space, but must also aid in the socio-economic development of the communities.”

The OneMoney product is linked to most Zimbabwean banks that are already on the ZIPIT platform and “customers enjoy the convenience of moving money from their banks to OneMoney and vice-versa”.

NetOne acting chief executive officer, Darlington Gutu in his speech at the launch said the company’s OneMoney service was an improvement of the previous OneWallet platform and “will be accessible in all corners of the country”.

“We have been getting feedback that has allowed us to come up with this improved product. OneMoney will be accessible in all corners of the country and it is our promise to subscribers as we push for financial inclusion,” he said.

According to the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, mobile money transactions totalled $11 billion in the period January to September.
