Loreeen Taenzaniswa Mpofu (38) was not asked to plead to the impersonation charge when she appeared before magistrate Sheunesu Matova who remanded her out of custody to December 5.

The court heard that on August 28 this year, Mpofu, who posed as a police inspector, approached the complainant Sergeant Esnath Govo stationed at Matabeleland North Ordinance Stores and requested more uniforms.

Govo immediately contacted her boss who advised her to give Mpofu uniforms and badges worth $73,50.

It is the State’s case that on September 15, Mpofu again visited the ordinance stores and introduced herself to Inspector Elison Phiri as a superintendent from Police General Headquarters operations department.

She requested to be issued with a Peak Gold cup for the rank of superintendent.

Phiri then asked her to produce her police identity particulars, which she claimed to have left home. Phiri asked for her force number which she said was 982398Z. Phiri sought verification of the force number with the Police General Headquarters and the Salary Service Bureau.

He established that the force number did not exist and reported the matter to Bulawayo Central Police Station, leading to Mpofu’s arrest.
