BULAWAYO mayor, Martin Moyo, has called on residents to provide insurance cover for their properties, particularly houses, so that they have something to fall back on in case of natural disasters like hailstorms or fire.

BULAWAYO mayor, Martin Moyo, has called on residents to provide insurance cover for their properties, particularly houses, so that they have something to fall back on in case of natural disasters like hailstorms or fire.

Moyo made the remarks in the wake of last Wednesday’s hailstorm which left over 100 residents homeless with 10 others injured after their properties’ roofs were blown off by strong winds in eMthunzini and part of Nkulumane suburbs.

“We are shocked as a city about what happened to some of the houses, but if residents could have insurance cover they are assured of getting some compensation if such things happen in future,” he said.

“We really sympathise with those people because it is now rainy season where people need to be sheltered and it is unfortunate that those same shelters have been destroyed. Our city housing and community services department plans to assist in any way possible,” he said.

Moyo said people should also worry about the quality of workmanship and quality of material that they use in building their houses to guard against such mishaps.

“We are used to that wind that uproots asbestos not destroying houses and property and we are really sorry as a city for such damage,” he said.
