The move is set to help keep the city clean, and support the capital city’s waste management efforts.

Speaking at the handover ceremony at Town House in Harare this week, acting town clerk, Josephine Ncube commended Econet for taking a lead role in ensuring the cleanliness of the city.

“We are excited that this donation comes at a time when we have just received the first consignment of the 30 refuse collection trucks that will be used to collect and dispose of waste from these bins in our city”, she said, speaking at the handover ceremony attended by representatives from council, Econet Wireless and the Environmental Management Agency (EMA).

Ncube said public-private partnerships were essential in helping Harare achieve its vision of attaining world-class city status by 2025.

EMA acting director-general, Aaron Chigona said: “We advocate for an integrated waste management approach, where sustainable waste management practices, such as waste reduction, re-use and recycling of waste, become the norm rather than the exception.”

Econet media relations executive, Fungai Mandiveyi said the company would continue working with EMA, the City of Harare and all relevant stakeholders in ensuring a clean environment.

“As a business, right from the top, we are mindful of the responsibility we have towards ensuring a safe, clean and healthy environment for the citizens and communities that live in the markets we serve, and we take that responsibility very seriously,” he said.
