WHO communications officer Wendy Julias told Southern Eye that the summit would start running from August 28 to September 1, attracting 47 African countries.

“It is the annual flagship meeting of ministers of Health from the region during which they discuss a range of strategies and actions to tackle public health challenges in the region,” she said.

“As the highest decision-making body on health, its decisions have, over the years, contributed immensely towards improving the health and well-being of people in the region.”

Julias listed the regional committee’s main functions as formulating regional policies and programmes while supervising the activities of the regional office.

“The committee formulates policies governing matters of an exclusively regional character while intensifying efforts to develop regional health policies and programmes in support of national, regional and global strategies for health for all,” she said.

“It also reviews WHO’s actions in individual member States within the region, while also supervising activities of the regional office increasing monitoring, control and evaluation functions to ensure the proper reflection of national, regional and global health policies in regional programmes are implemented, among other roles.” Last year, the summit was held in Ethiopia.
