Victoria Falls Combined Residents’ Association chairperson, Kelvin Moyo made the call at a media briefing in preparation for the rebranded national event kicking off next Thursday, which will be hosted by Matabeleland North.

“We are happy to be considered to host this kind of event. This is our time, as a town, to be part of the hosting team,” he said.

“May I, therefore, appeal to all residents to behave well during that period?

“Let us not tarnish the image of our town and our image as well.”

Sport and Recreation Commission commissioner Clement Mukwasi concurred: “Let us maintain our dignity during this event.

“Do not let your immoral behaviour cost you for the rest of your life just because of the excitement of having many people around town.

“Let us value the sanctity of life.”

A total of 2 598 athletes will attend the games.

Moyo bemoaned the local authority’s inability to provide more sporting facilities.

“When you look at the whole province, we have the most accommodation facilities, but it is sad that we don’t have enough sporting facilities to host games,” he said.

“Council must consider prioritising sport tourism in its budgets.”

The resort town’s mayor, Sifiso Mpofu last week appealed to delegates at the just-ended Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries conference to help upgrade the town’s sporting facilities.

The games will be held in Victoria Falls, Hwange and Lupane, although some sports will be played in Bulawayo due to lack of facilities in the host province.

Victoria Falls will cater for rugby, golf, chess and weightlifting.
