Bulawayo City Council is considering recycling waste as a way of managing garbage in the city’s oldest suburb, Makokoba.

The decision comes following the mushrooming of illegal dumpsites, which are an eyesore.
Speaking at a recent stakeholders’ tour of the recycling facilities with headmasters and residents’ associations, acting health superintendent, Nkanyiso Ndlovu, said the community should take waste to recycling plants instead of dumping at illegal places.
“The tours were to show stakeholders that there are other alternatives of managing waste,” he said.
The local authority has suggested a number of recycling methods to improve the Makokoba waste management pilot project.
Ndlovu said plants had been established to buy waste material from residents for recycling.
“Residents can use waste as a way of generating revenue. Treger Plastics buys such material from residents and residents, in turn, make returns from it,” he said.

The stakeholders toured the Davis Granite site, which does composting, Treger Plastics, which recycles waste material into re-usable plastic and garbage cages at Zonkizizwe shopping complex, where plastic containers are stored before disposal.
