The outfit, which danced away with $300, will represent the province at the national finals set for Bulawayo on August 5.

Maungwe traditional dance group came second and were rewarded with $200, while Dhumatasangana from Mutare came third and pocketed $150.

National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) acting provincial manager for Manicaland, Alexander Tunzi, said he was happy with the tussling he witnessed among the various groups.

“I was impressed with the level of competition. Every group wanted the ultimate prize to represent the province at the national finals. Chipinge has always been a traditional home of traditional dance music and the support from the Chipinge community was impressive,” he said.

Macca managed to put up a polished act of authentic Muchongoyo, the warriors’ dance. Their dance was embellished by vigour and well-deserving impact and effort. But we also cherish such platforms in promoting and preserving our traditional cultures. Above all, it’s an opportunity for the artistes to market their works and broaden their spectrum,” he said.

The festival, which has been running since 1963, is held in partnership with the Zimbabwe National Traditional Dance Association, Delta Beverages and NACZ.

Last year, Redwing Mine’s Ben Arinoti won the provincial finals held in Rusape before the 18-member group went on to win the national finals held at White City Stadium in Bulawayo. They are scheduled to perform as a guest group at this year’s finals.
