The MDC-T Bulawayo provincial leadership has launched a mobilisation campaign to encourage its membership to participate in the upcoming biometric voter registration (BVR) programme, ahead of next year’s general elections.

MDC-T acting provincial spokesperson, Felix Magalela Sibanda said the campaign would run until end of next month.
“The provincial council of the MDC-T Bulawayo has resolved to embark on mobilisation on BVR with effect from July to August 31. The council, made of 60 branches, 29 wards and 12 districts/constituencies, and provincial executive resolved that each district and its wards are to mobilise their structures, civic society organisations, churches, trade unions residents’ associations within their jurisdiction as it were,” Sibanda said.
“The objective of these proposed district rallies is to meet the people, explain and educate them about the new registration system and how to go about it. As a system, the party felt compelled to act now than wait for the 11th hour. We felt there is very limited time before watershed 2018 elections.”
Sibanda said Bulawayo is the stronghold of the MDC-T and they wish to maintain their pole position by winning all be it presidential, parliamentary or local government councillorship.
“We are determined to repeat our splendid record since 2000 to 2013,” he said.
He said 12 rallies will be held to encourage people to register to vote.

“After these rallies, we are to hold a ‘mother’ or a star rally in Bulawayo White City Stadium on September 2, 2013. This rally shall be graced by none other than party president, Morgan Richard Tsvangirai,” he said.
Sibanda said they expect about 2 500 supporters at each rally, which shall all be inclusive, for different stakeholders in the city of Kings/Queens.
“The mother of all rallies shall be decisive in both the quality and quantity. Henceforth, the MDC-T Bulawayo, is action-oriented so that nothing shall be taken for granted. Visibility at all corners of Bulawayo is paramount to state the least,” Sibanda said.
“We will never leave any stone unturned because we want all and sundry to understand the BVR and that all people register without difficulties. We want, as a matter of urgency, that all without IDs and other official documents be issued with them as per the requirement of the law.”
He said citizens without official documents due to Gukurahundi genocide must be assisted as well without any hustles.
“MDC-T as a people’s project, and born out of the struggling workers, is confident that come 2018 election will form a government only when minimum reforms are done and the process is free, fair and credible,” he said.
