The party’s spokesperson, Methuseli Moyo, said preparations for the inaugural convention were at an advanced stage. “We can confirm that certainly our inaugural national convention will be held soon; in fact, within the next weeks, in the capital city of Harare,” he said.

“We can’t, at this stage, confirm the actual date, venue and programme for obvious reasons. We are gearing our structures in all parts of the country for the event, where our president, Joice Teurai Ropa Mujuru, together with the five other elected senior leaders, will be confirmed to lead NPP for the next five years.”

Moyo said the national leadership of the party’s three wings, which are women, freedom fighters and youth, would also be endorsed at the convention.

He said the convention would also set the tone for the anticipated opposition coalition to challenge Zanu PF in next year’s general elections.

“At the convention, the president will deliver her inaugural address as substantive leader of the party, and spell out the direction of our politics and policies for the 2018 elections and beyond,” Moyo said.

“She will also zero in on the issue of the moment: the envisaged grand coalition by opposition forces.”

The party is also reportedly reaching out to foreign high-ranking delegates to attend, although Moyo declined to reveal their identities.
