He will lead more than 1 000 Lions clubs in Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe following the elections held last month in Malawi.

Lions Clubs International was formed on June 7, 1917 and this year marks its centenary.

“Lion Jona Machaya, an ICT entrepreneur who has been in Lionism for 16 years, has held various positions in the charitable organisation including being in charge of the Lions youth portfolio — the Leos — and being vice-district governor,” the Lions Club said in a statement.

“He has been invited to present at town hall meetings in Canada and Germany. He is also a faculty trainer for Lions Clubs International, where he is part of a team that is responsible for training new Lion leaders across the continent. He is married to Lion Sarah and they have three boys and a girl.”

Last year, the Health and Child Care ministry successfully mobilised and advocated through a Lions Clubs International Foundation grant of $100 000, resulting in more than four million children being vaccinated against the two killer diseases of measles and rubella.

The Lions of Zimbabwe also joined hands with the civil society in alleviating the suffering of people as a result of the Tokwe-Mukosi and Hwange floods and they donated $10 000 for each disaster.

This year, they also donated over 200 wheelchairs to deserving recipients, through an initiative by Lion Jona Machaya’s club, Harare Phoenix Lions Club.

Lions Clubs International is the largest service club organisation in the world. Its 1,4 million members in more than 46 000 clubs are serving communities in 207 countries and geographical areas around the globe.

Since 1917, Lions clubs have aided the blind and visually-impaired, championed youth initiatives and strengthened local communities through hands-on service and humanitarian projects.
