BULAWAYO High Court judge Justice Maxwell Takuva has expressed concern over the increase in murder cases involving young people.

Takuva made the remarks yesterday as he sentenced a Bulawayo fruit vendor, Everton Moyo (21), to an effective 35-year jail term for killing Trymore Nunurai (35) in January, 2015.

The court heard that Moyo ganged up with four accomplices and robbed Nunurai of his cellphone, and assaulted him with various weapons in the city centre, leading to his death six days later.

“The trend now seems that youths are taking a leading role in committing violent crimes. We have, time and again, warned young people against engaging in such crimes, but sadly, it appears the warnings are falling on deaf ears,” Takuva said.

“Our duty is to impose jail terms that satisfy societal needs and, in view of your age, we will temper justice with mercy by sentencing you to 35 years in jail,” he said, describing Moyo as a wicked person who deserved to rot in jail.

“You killed an innocent young man who was coming from work out of sheer greed, which is a reflection of inherent wickedness on your person. Our duty, as courts, is to uphold the sanctity of human life as well as protecting society from people like you by removing them from the society for a very long time.”

After the attack, Nunurai managed to walk to his residence and later went to Mpilo Central Hospital, where he died six days later.

A post mortem report produced in court indicated that Nunurai died of epidural haematomia (bleeding in the head), skull fractures and head injuries due to assault.

His mobile phone was recovered from a Chalet Luphahla, who led detectives to Moyo.
