NEWSPAPER vendors in Bulawayo could soon be required to pay $15 monthly rental fees to be allowed to operate in the central business district.

The proposal was made by the finance committee during a recent full council meeting with the city fathers saying the fixed rental charges were meant to regularise newspaper vending.
Councillors were initially divided over the charges with some suggesting $10 while others wanted vendors to pay $15 per month.
“Councillor Mlandu Ncube felt that the committee’s recommendation was appropriate and therefore suggested that vendors should be charged a rental of $10 instead of $15 per month,” part of the minutes read.
However, councillor James Sithole said the fees should be kept at $15 per month, saying this had already been included in the city’s 2017 budget.
“I feel that the amounts could not be reduced as they had already been included in the 2017 budget which has already been approved by the parent ministry (Local Government),” he said.
Councillor Collet Ndlovu concurred with Sithole’s view saying reducing the rentals was likely to compromise the budget.
