Shepherd Muringani, a mechanic from Mkoba 12, allegedly had a misunderstanding with his girlfriend, Priscilla Munyanyi (33), on June 18 this year and set her alight.

Munyanyi is reportedly battling for her life at Gweru General Hospital.

Muringani was not asked to plead when he appeared before Gweru provincial magistrate Pathekile Msipa, who remanded him in custody to July 6.

The State alleges that on the fateful day, Munyanyi visited Muringani at his house in Mkoba 12 and allegedly quizzed him over phone text messages sent by another girlfriend.

A heated verbal exchange broke out as Muringani denied the allegations. In a fit of rage, he allegedly poured paraffin on her and set her on fire.

Munyanyi sustained a swollen body and blisters all over the body with her eyes completely shut as a result of the burns.

Muringani was arrested as he paid her a visit at the hospital.
