A 69-YEAR-OLD man from Kensington in Harare was yesterday brought to court on charges of domestic violence after allegedly assaulting his relative at his wife’s funeral over “poor braaing” skills.

The suspect, Wolfgang Griss, pleaded not guilty to the assault charges when he appeared yesterday before Harare magistrate Joy Chikodzero, who remanded him out of custody to tomorrow for continuation of trial.
The complainant in the matter, Martin Cornway (20), told the court that on the day in question, Griss choked him after accusing him of not braaing the meat well.
However, Griss left the court in stitches when he said he simply grabbed Cornway by the neck in a friendly manner. Griss further told the court that during the funeral gathering, he passed by people who were constantly asking him when the food would be served.
He then said when he went back to check on the braai, he found out that there was no meat being cooked and the fire was dying out.
Griss further said he reignited the fire and put some meat and when the meat was about to be done, Cornway approached him without saying anything and began taking the meat from the braai and the two then exchanged words.
But, it was the State’s case that on March 15 this year at around 9pm Griss was at his wife’s funeral together with Cornway when he accused him of not making the braai well. The State alleges Cornway kept quiet and this did not go down well with Griss who then assaulted him with an open hand once on the neck and choked him in the process.
