MDC-T in turmoil

A FIERCE storm has reportedly hit the MDC-T after its electorate directorate recently proposed a raft of contentious internal election guidelines that seek to shield members of the party’s national executive, among them sitting legislators, from being challenged by their subordinates ahead of the 2018 general elections.

Party spokesperson, Obert Gutu confirmed that the party was in the process of crafting a template to guide the selection of candidates for the 2018 elections, but appealed for calm as the guidelines were still at the draft stage.

“I have always said this, it is work in progress. The document that you are talking about is work in progress and deliberations on it are still there. People should not rush to the Press because we are still consulting and when all is done, party structures will be told,” he said.

The proposed election guidelines, which were tabled before the party’s standing committee on Monday, were reportedly dismissed by some members in the MDC-T national council, provincial and district structures as meant to protect unpopular and underperforming legislators.

“According to the template, there shall be 50% women seats and 20% of the 50% shall be reserved for young women. The party shall also reserve 20% for youths,” an MDC-T insider said.

“Seniority is going to be considered, that is, no one is going to contest someone senior to him/her. This means anyone who is occupying a position at national level cannot be challenged by a member from the province even if the person is not popular. That is undemocratic.

“There are some people, who are in lower ranks, but have been in the party for many more years than some in the national leadership.
This deprives the right of party cadres to contest for any post as stated in the party’s constitution.”

  1. So far it is very evident that, whether mdct or zanupf, the difference is the same. Very undemocratic, authoritarian, autocratic, dictatorial.

    1. A recent parlimentary survey indicated that only 5 women participate in August house so why does shallow minded Mdc-t wants to keep on protecting or reserve seats for useless Women. It is understandable to only reserve for standing commitees members.Second Mr Gutu what is seniority? Is it age or hierachy position?Or time one joined the Part? Because some brach, ward Members recruited cadres who are in Province and National eg Douglas Mwonzora who Joined Mdc-t 2008,Gift Banda who joined 2013,Nomvula Mguni joined 2011,Job Sikhala joined 2014,but people who recruited them are still in Branches and wards. Primary elections must be for all

      1. So since there is no one above Tsvangirayi, he will stand unopposed!!! Now that is undemocratic.

“we are still consulting and when all is done, party structures will be told” So who are you consulting if party structures will be TOLD?

  2. makuita se ZANU manje

    1. bulawayo province

Looks like Mdc-t is now personalised and Mp,Councillorship,Pr and Senate its for Provincil and National member only no wonder all Bulawayo Mps and Councillors does not respect and report to District structures eg Entumbane/Makhandani,Byo East,Byo Central,Nketa/Emganwini,Byo South and Magwegwe. If Mdc-t endoeses such stupid template it must embrace bhora musango in 2018.It happening in 2013 when Khupe rigged and Imposed her people in Bulawayo,Mat South and Mat North.

  3. Chamisa did that last time and we told him it will come with calamity, he refused to listen what happened, In Bikita a seat was donated to Kereke.

  4. tendai chaminuka

MDC-T an extension of ZANU (P.f).Thats why zanu pf can afford to have internal fights for they know that their back is covered by the so called opposition.MDC -T.What type of democracy is that when a person can not be challenged because of seniority. That is the same concept they are using on the Presidential Seat rina VaMugabe.Thats why they put such flimsy challenges only to hoodwink the electorate.Pamberi na Tsvangirai ne MDC-T ne ZANU (P.F)

  5. Thisz a clear directive fr Tsvangirai himself, the purported consultations are only a cover -up,what will come out at the end of the day wil b only Tsvangirai’s dictated opinions.Tsvangirai doesn’t want to b challenged primarily at the party presidency hennce protecting his right hand men&women.Iam on record telling the whole nation that this man indeed is zanu pf in action.Thisz another dictator & is not a democrat at all, wondering at, why at all why our nation should elect this bunch of manipulators to zimbabwe house or to the governance of our nation

  6. Thisz a clear directive fr Tsvangirai himself, the purported consultations are only a cover -up,what will come out at the end of the day wil b only Tsvangirai’s dictated opinions.Tsvangirai doesn’t want to b challenged primarily at the party presidency hence protecting his right hand men&women.Iam on record telling the whole nation that this man indeed is zanu pf in action.Thisz another dictator & is not a democrat at all, wondering at, why at all our nation should elect this bunch of manipulators to Zimbabwe House or to the governance of our nation

  7. MDC-T is getting it wrong there. Democracy should see the electorate decide on whom they want, whether senior, junior, male or female. Let the most popular win them votes and the seniors wait for the proportional representation facility and other appointments. If the seniors have failed to take advantage of their seniority and entrench their popularity then they actually did a disservice to themselves and the party and therefore deserve to be on the terraces when the game is played by the more skilled. Zimbabwe is still patriarchal in some areas especially rural areas, imposing a female candidate against their will may torch a storm. To be forewarned is to be forearmed.

  8. Mazidofo evanhu, no wonder why muchibirwa ma Elections ne ZANU-PF, Where have you ever heard such a stupid idea. Work in progress my foot, Thats a receip for disaster. Zimbabwe doesn’t need quotas.NO TO PERCENTAGES. LET ALL SEATS BE CONTESTED OPENLY. Let everyone have an equal chance, men, women, transvestites, gay, youth or whatever. Obert and company stop trying to smuggle your wives/girlfriends and children under the guise of quota representation. Let the people choose who they want irrespective of sex. If Zimbabweans choose 100% women to represent them then let it be it. If they choose 90% men then those are the wishes of the people. LET US CHOOSE WHO WE WANT TO REPRESENT US IRRESPECTIVE OF SEX. NO GROUP OF PEOPLE SHOULD HAVE AN ADVANTAGE BECAUSE OF GENDER. EQUAL RIGHTS THAT YOU PURPORT TO BE CHAMPIONS OF MEANS BOTH SEXES ARE EQUAL AND SHOULD BE GIVEN EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES. Honestly i have never seen madofo akadai.Instead of crafting laws that will alleviate the people’s suffering when you get into power, you waste time crafting some STUPID guidelines. You should be telling the people what plans you have for them in the unlikely event of you getting into power. You should be discussing Youth Unemployment, Industrialization, Human rights, good governance. YOU ARE REALLY A CONFUSED LOT. ZIMBABWE NEEDS A BETTER PARTY. FOR YOUR OWN INFORMATION, from your expected total number of votes subtract one (-1) from your votes. I have always voted for you since MDC inception. Am disappointed.

    1. Mac shut-up

  9. pure nonsense let people chose their candidates

  10. And this is the reason why Morgan and his MDC T will not govern this country. Morgan seems to have a self destruct button everytime things start looking up for him. Uledlozi lobuyanga!

  11. turmoil!! don’t see no turmoil mr editor

  12. What national democracy does MDC-T purport to preach if it can’t express the same at the party level? I tend to doubt their credibility as the alternative govt. Democracy demands that the nomination of candidates and subsequent election be done transparently with no undue influence. Why preach water and take wine?

  13. This protection of ” senior” people in the party is a crazy idea. For what reasons really? So it automatically means no-one can challenge for the post of president in the party? Cry beloved Africa.

  14. commotion & confussion

  15. So much for campaigning for national electoral reforms. MDC T is all about grandstanding. Charity begins at home, you cannot expect Zanu PF to acceed to your electoral reforms demands when you are stiffling democracy in your own party. MDC T lost the 2013 elections because of this same flawed and udemocratic approach to candidate selection. Only the local executive voted in the so called primaries and some candidates were parachuted in when Zanu PF opened candidate selection to all the local membership. Now they claim rigging, really?

    1. @dzvinyangoma you are spot on.Looks like Mdc-T is not seriuosly to be the next government no wonder why its Mps and Councillors are not perfoming.

  16. What happened to democracy in Movement for Democratic Change? Is there a provision in the MDC constitution which bars other members from contesting their seniors and what kind of seniority is is being talked about here? Is the party shielding some big people…the party is full of lawyers and i. am sure they are democrats…let sanity prevail.

  17. Zanuism at its most stinking stage, people must differentiate between Zanu pf and the Mdc but if its like this, two sides of the same coin. Whats seniority per se when someone is inept as they come. These guys at times must practice what they preach, no sacred cows everybody must be subjected to the democratic process irespective of the years they have saved to test their popularity with the people. Please guys do yourself some serious introspection other than coming up with Mugabeism dictatorial traits.

  18. Guys Zanu PF ndi Mugabe, MDCT ndi Tsvangirai zvatopera zvakadaro asingade ngaite yake party. Thats politics in Africa.
