Road to Anfield is an international 5-a-side football tournament offering Standard Chartered Bank clients and its stakeholders an opportunity to travel to English Premiership giants Liverpool.

Dairibord Zimbabwe looked well on course to win the three-team tournament which also had Zambia, represented by University of Zambia, and played in a round robin format, when they easily beat BDF 3-1 in the opening match.

They then lost 2-1 to University of Zambia in the second match, but still managed to top the standings and faced the eventual winners, who had finished second, in the decider.

But just like in 2015, when the tournament was last played in the region, Dairibord, who represented the country then, failed to hold their nerves in the final match.

And just like in the previous tournament, it was Dairibord themselves who pressed the self-destruct button, when a Terrence Kanjanda’s back pass was intercepted, and with dire consequences.

Despite a spirited fightback, the soldiers held on to clinch the ticket to Anfield Road on May 21, where they will get an opportunity to watch Liverpool play a Premiership match against Middlesbrough, as well as receiving professional training sessions to be conducted by Liverpool’s former players and coaches.
