BCC deputy director engineering services, Gugu Mkhwananzi, revealed this at a residents meeting held at Nketa hall yesterday.

“A survey carried out in 2013 revealed that 70% of our road network needs rehabilitation, and out of $1,7 million that we need for emergency works, only $340 000 has been given to us for the rehabilitation of roads from Zinara,” Mkhwananzi said.

“We have asked for a supplementary budget of $3,5 million to cater for the rehabilitation of our road network in the city following a report of the survey.”

The city, according to Mkhwananzi, has since set up a road condition committee comprising of officials from Zinara, the Traffic Safety Board, Vehicle Inspectorate Department, police and the Ministry of Transport which will a weekly report to the ministry of Home affairs.

“We will rely on reports from residents about the condition of the roads in the city and will go to assess the problem before sending the reports to the Ministry in Harare,” he said.

Mkhwananzi urged residents to pay their rentals, so as to generate revenue to fix roads and sewage so that the city can attract investors.

Residents called on the city to reduce water charges given the abundant rains this year, but Mkhwananzi argued that the city council is importing chemicals at market value, competing with countries like China, Britain which makes it difficult to slash rates.

On the issue of tenders being awarded to Harare companies, Mkhwananzi said Bulawayo business people must register their companies with the State Procurement Board so as to be considered when issuing tenders.
