Manicaland police spokesperson Tavhiringwa Kakohwa would neither deny nor confirm the number of casualties in the plane crash and its intended destination.

“l can confirm that there was a plane crash in Vumba near Mozambique. The number of people who died is not yet confirmed,” Kakohwa said.

NewsDay visited Mutare Aerodrome where the aircraft was slated to land in the morning and met a worker who refused to be named.

“A business delegation arrived here around 8am among them Chinese. They were waiting for the aircraft, but surprisingly they just left, more like in a huff, around 11am, that is when we received the news that there had been a crash in Vumba,” the worker said.

The police were reportedly scouring the area with the help of the Zimbabwe National Army helicopters for clues and possible survivors.

A Zimbabwe National Army helicopter later flew to Chancellor Primary School where bodies were recovered and taken to the nearby mortuary at Mutare General Hospital.

A source in Vumba said the six business executives were from Mozambique and that the crash happened at Honey-Wood Canning Company
