Local Government minister Saviour Kasukuwere in a Press statement yesterday said he had invoked Section 32c of the Civil Protection Act to allow the victims to get state assisted burials with each family receiving $200.

The minister, who sent his condolences called on road users to drive with caution especially this time when the roads were in bad shape and littered with potholes.

“It is heart-rending to note that though responsible authorities are trying their best to conduct awareness of safe driving, we continue to lose lives on our roads,” Kasukuwere said.

“To all drivers countrywide, may I reiterate the fact that life is scared and should be protected by all means possible. Due to the bad state of our roads as a result of unusually high rainfall all drivers are urged to practically apply defensive driving tactics and also take advantage of day travel,” he said.

Home Affairs minister Ignatius Chombo joined his counterpart issuing condolences saying his ministry through the gaming board will pay each family $500.

“I also take this opportunity to urge all motorists to exercise extreme caution on our roads which are in bad shape due to incessant rains and floods we are currently experiencing to avoid unnecessary loss of lives,” he said.

The 13 people were members of two families who were travelling in a commuter omnibus on their way to a funeral in Masvingo, when a haulage truck after hitting a pothole collided with their vehicle near the National University of Science and Technology in Bulawayo.
