MUTARE residents have blasted their mayor, Tatenda Nhamarare, for being secretive and refusing to disclose names of three candidates shortlisted for the town clerk’s post.
BY KENNETH NGANGANI
This came as Nhamarare told NewsDay last week that the names had already been submitted to the Local Government Board for consideration, although he declined to reveal them, claiming there were individuals plotting to stifle the process.
But NewsDay has established that the list includes current Chegutu town clerk, Alexio Mandigo, Bindura chamber secretary, Evelyn Madziire and Rusape town secretary, Joshua Maligwa.
United Mutare Residents and Ratepayers’ Trust director, Sebastian Bakare, yesterday demanded transparency in the selection process.
“We are worried why the names are not being revealed, at least we should be consulted as residents. We should also know the final three candidates. We are in the dark, this a big office in our city, so we should be consulted since this is a key appointment, ’’ he said. The residents said they preferred a town clerk with good social standing and someone with a passion to work for the city.
“The new town clerk should be a person with personal integrity, and a person who is interested in the affairs of Mutare City Council, whose primary concern should be service delivery and an individual, who is not corruptible,’’ he said.
The council has gone for almost a year without a substantive town clerk after Obert Muzawazi resigned last year over alleged maladministration.
