Learnmore Takawira of Pakamisa Pump Station, where he was employed as a general hand by a Gweru City Council employee, a superintendent at the station, drowned in the early hours of Sunday, while coming from a beer drinking spree with two colleagues.

Provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Joel Goko was not available for comment, but a police officer at the scene said they had been searching for Takawira’s body since Sunday.

“We received a report that a man had drowned while attempting to cross Gweru River on Sunday, but we only managed to retrieve his body today (yesterday),” the police officer said.

According to reports, Takawira and two unnamed friends spent Saturday night drinking beer around Mtapa high density suburb.

In the early hours of Sunday, Takawira and his two colleagues tried to cross the river from Ascot Extension, where the (now-deceased) and another man were swept away by the flooded river.

Takawira’s companion managed to swim to safety, while he drowned. Another friend, who reportedly had advised against the daring attempt to cross the dangerous river watched helplessly.

The deceased’s mother said she received information that her son had drowned mid-morning on Sunday before she went to make a police report.

Last week, seven people drowned in Gokwe, while trying to cross flooded rivers.

Police statistics show that as of January 22, 48 people drowned countrywide while attempting to cross flooded rivers, which are a result of incessant rains pounding most parts of the country.
