Tafadzwa Tichareva was yesterday remanded in custody to January 25 when he appeared before Harare magistrate Rumbidzai Mugwagwa.

The State alleges on August 4 last year, Tichareva had a heated argument with his wife, Tsitsi Chibinya, over a proposed visit to his grandmother. Tichareva allegedly accused his wife of refusing to visit his grandmother to help her with domestic chores.

Tichareva allegedly assaulted the complainant and stormed out of the house, only to come back an hour later in the company of his grandmother to collect dishes and pots. When Chibinya refused to have her dishes taken away, the unnamed grandmother left.

Tichareva then packed his clothes and threatened to move out of the house in protest, and Chibinya allegedly blocked him, resulting in another physical fight.

In the ensuing melee, Tichareva poured paraffin on Chibinya, set her alight and locked her inside the house.

Chibinya managed to put out the fire using water and reported the matter to the police and she was rushed to hospital.
