Although Makatuka believes reigning Soccer Star of the Year, Hardlife Zvirekwi has a good chance, the Caps United vice-captain believes Tsipa, who finished the season with 11 goals to win the Golden Boot award, deserves the top gong.

“It’s a contest between ‘Mudhara Achauya’ and Zvirekwi, I think. But personally I think Tsipa deserves the award. If you consider his age and the goals he contributed, surely he should get the award. He did not just score crucial goals, but he has been an inspiration to the team,” he said.

There was a feeling in some quarters that Tsipa deserved to win the Castle Lager Soccer Star of the Year award ahead of Zvirekwi.

Tsipa, who turns 35 on January 25, believed his advanced age spurred him to score 11 goals, which helped Caps United to championship success for the first time in 11 years.

Zvirekwi was also consistent throughout the season, playing a total of 28 games and contributing five assists.

There is also left-back Ronald Pfumbidzai, who others also think was unlucky not to have been selected the overall Castle Lager Soccer Star of the Year.

Pfumbidzai played 25 games and contributed the highest number of assists, 19, towards the 42 goals Caps United scored.

The Castle Lager Premier Soccer League champions are set to honour their outstanding players from the 2016 season.

Some of the categories at the awards include Player of the Season, Players’ Player of the Year and Most Improved Player.
