SUNGURA ace, Alick Macheso confirmed his status as a music craftsman when his appearance on stage at the Surrey Open Braai party held on Sunday afternoon, saw crowds swelling into the venue after Pengaudzoke frontman, Faheem Somanje, had warmed up for him.

Extrabasso, as Macheso is affectionately known in music circles, put up a scintillating performance during which he took fans down memory lane with yesteryear hits before belting out current songs, as dancer, Majuice thrilled fans with his nimble footwork.

Thousands thronged the venue in defiance of the dark sky, pregnant with rainfall, that threatened to release a deluge of rain.

The organisers were caught unawares, as they had not expected such a huge crowd, with some fans driving all the way from Harare and there was some pushing and shoving at the entrance.

Calm was, however, restored quickly and the gig proceeded smoothly, with revellers getting a braai pack after paying $3 at the gate.

Surrey Group, a company that deals in meat products, brought a number of refrigerated trucks full of meat such that there was constant supply.

The event was to officially launch the Open Braai Area constructed few months ago and will soon host a number of braai parties, as well as musicians.

Pengaudzoke did not disappoint with their opening act, as they played renditions of the band’s late founders including Tsaona, Zvibate Pamhaka and Sochisi.

Surrey national sales manager, Ranganayi Zihumo, said the launch went on well although they were not expecting such a huge turnout.

“We are overwhelmed. We did not expect such a crowd, given that it is Sunday as well as the weather conditions. However, we are happy that we managed to handle the event well.

There was enough supply of meat and drinks and no one complained. Now that we have launched the Open Braai Area, it means we have to host more of such events, as well as bringing a number of different artistes to perform,” he said.

The new braai area, which is big as a football pitch, has two large built-in braai stands and over 15 portable braai stands.
