The Fashion Week drew 25 designers from 10 countries, including Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Zambia and Jamaica.

Mutsvati told NewsDay yesterday that her participation as the country’s representative was a humbling experience that would help her tap into the South African market.

“I was humbled by the invite as the organisers of the event said I had brought something different to Pretoria since their designers were not as daring as I am,” she said.

“It was a great opportunity, which I gladly accepted, as it was a chance for me to tap into the South African market. They also want me to do a workshop with their crafters, especially the ones that design handbags and jewellery.”

Mutsvati said such cultural exchanges were an important aspect in getting her exposed to different beautiful cultures around the world.

“These exchanges make us see the differences in our cultures and beliefs and in the process, help us create something unique,” she said.

Mutsvati, who works under the brand name Cheukwa, has been the inspiration for the dresses won by top musicians such as Hope Masike, Dudu Manhenga, Rumbi Katedza, Ruth Mbangwa and the late Chiwoniso Maraire.

Mutsvati holds a Diploma in Fine Art and a National Certificate in Applied Arts and Design from Harare Polytechnic College.

She has created numerous theoretical costumes for plays, commercials and film productions, with wardrobe styling being no exception.
