Speaking at the launch of the ambitious project yesterday, council chairperson, Killer Zivhu said water-harvesting could be the panacea to the perennial food shortages in the drought-prone district.

“Each household should harvest water for their crops as Chivi receives little rains annually. The water harvested should then sustain the crops when the rains stop. We want to eradicate the donor dependency syndrome. We are moving from village ZimAsset to household ZimAsset,” he said.

“We have been complaining every year about drought, but we cannot continue to depend on rain-fed agriculture. We realised we really needed to do something other than just fold our hands.”

Zivhu said the local authority would take on board experts and officials from the Agriculture ministry to engage the farmers over the water-harvesting project.

The pilot project is estimated to cost $10 000.
