Zanu PF has pledged to dole out 300 metric tonnes of seed maize and other agricultural inputs to Bikita West villagers in a move believed to be a vote-buying gimmick ahead of a by-election to be held on January 21 next year.

Psychomotor minister Josaya Hungwe, who is leading Zanu PF candidate, Beauty Chabaya’s campaign programme, exposed the ploy at a rally at Bikita Minerals on Sunday.
“I have been sent to tell you that President (Robert) Mugabe loves you. He has seen it fit to give you seed, so that when you vote for Chabaya, you do it knowing you will have food on the table at harvest time,” he said.
“I have come with 300 metric tonnes of seed for you. Each one of you will get enough for your families. The President sent me to say go and give those people in Bikita,” he said.
The goodies, Hungwe said, would be distributed by Zanu PF ward chairpersons to ensure opposition activists do not benefit.
“If you read the Book of Judges 7, you will find the story of 300 soldiers who went to rescue the children of God, so your party Zanu PF has sourced 300 metric tonnes. Besides that, we have also sourced money for projects for our people in the area. We are going to set up poultry projects for our women,” Hungwe said.
Hungwe was joined by Zanu PF political commissar, Saviour Kasukuwere, who accused Bikita Minerals of funding Zimbabwe People First candidate, Kudakwashe Gopo.

Kasukuwere threatened the company with unspecified action if it continues to sponsor opposition parties, while doing nothing for its workers and the surrounding community.
Chabaya will battle it out with Gopo, Madock Chivasa of the National Constitutional Assembly and former MP, Heya Shoko, who is standing as an independent.
