With captain Hardlife Zvirekwi reportedly on his way to Tanzania, Caps United will be left thin in the right-back position and coach Lloyd Chitembwe has identified Khumbuyani as a possible replacement.

Caps United beat FC Platinum to the finishing line in a very close championship race decided on the last day of the league programme two weeks ago and with that success, they also won themselves a berth in the Caf Champions League.

The Harare giants have since got down to business in the transfer market looking for players to bolster their squad ahead of the December 31 deadline for registration of players for the premier continental club competition.

Chitembwe, who worked with Khumbuyani before he left to join How Mine last year, is an admirer of the full-back and discussions to bring him on board are already underway.

Khumbuyani’s current deal with How Mine runs out on December 31. Yesterday, the former Warriors defender acknowledged there had been inquiries from Caps United, but declined to disclose more details.

“You know, I have worked with Lloyd Chitembwe before, but I have nothing much to say except that there have been some inquiries from Caps United. I will only be in a position to comment sometime next week,” he said.

Caps United also have Zvikomborero Bizeki and Valentine Musarurwa, who play in the same position.

Khumbuyani started his football career at Chapungu before moving to Masvingo United, where he played for just half of the season before joining Kiglon in 2008. The veteran defender then switched to Monomotapa the following year. He also won several caps with the Warriors.

Caps United have also launched another bid for the signature of Dynamos midfielder, Brett Amidu, whose contract with DeMbare also expires on December 31.

Amidu has also been a subject of interest from PSL runners-up FC Platinum. Negotiations between the two parties are already underway.

While Caps United have gone into the transfer market, they run the risk of losing some of their stars, whose contracts expire at the end of this month.

Several players, among them vice-captain Stephen Makatuka, midfielders, Tafadzwa “Fire” Rusike and Abbas Amidu’s contracts expire on December 31.

Rusike has said he was weighing up his options, before committing himself to Caps United for the next season.

Although Soccer Star of the Year finalist, Ronald Pfumbidzai and Zvirekwi still have running contracts with the Zimbabwean champions, it is understood there have been inquiries from unnamed foreign clubs.
