The awards night will be attended by club greats that include Lawrence Phiri, Alexander Maseko, Barry Daka, and Mark Watson. Former goalkeeper, Bruce Grobbelaar has also been invited.

Kutsanzira faces competition from Soccer Star of the Year finalist, Peter Muduhwa and midfielder Simon Munawa, who also narrowly missed out on the national selection.

Former player and manager, Phiri (68), who also chairs the Botswana Chapter of the Highlanders Supporters, yesterday spoke on behalf of the former players.

“My presence here is very simple. It is to reunite with my former colleagues using the occasion of the awards tomorrow night. About 23 former players will attend the function just to give the current crop of players encouragement,” he said. “We are hoping that, as we mingle, we will rekindle quite a lot of old memories. We would like to assure the executive committee that we are fully behind them. What we are doing is an indication to the players that we appreciate their responsibilities to emulate us and build the club.”

The awards night is a precursor to the Highlanders and Dynamos challenge match on Sunday at Barbourfields Stadium to mark the conclusion of the Highlanders 90th anniversary celebrations, which started in February.

Highlanders’ secretary-general, Emmett Ndlovu said all was in place for the awards, although he was not at liberty to divulge the nature of prizes to be awarded to the players.

“So far so good; we are happy with the response from the corporate world and the supporters. The response has been tremendous. This is going to be a great occasion. We are expecting 300 to 350 people,” Ndlovu said.

Categories to be awarded prizes tomorrow include Player of the Season, Top Goal Scorer, which goes to Bruce Kangwa, who moved to Azam FC in Tanzania in mid-season, Most Promising Player, Most Disciplined Player, Most Improved Player, Players’ Player of the Season, Longest-Serving Player, Captain’s Award and the Best Junior Player from Division One.

Highlanders will also reward the Supporters’ Player of the Year and the Supporter of the Year.

The guest of honour will be Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries president Busisa Moyo.
