The Young Warriors left for South Africa yesterday morning.

The Highlanders forward was voted the Most Promising Under-20 Player of the Year by a panel consisting of head coaches in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League, team captains and football writers last week.

And a lot will be expected from him, as Zimbabwe battle with other teams in the regional tournament. The Harare City trio of Learnmore Muyambo, Jerry Chipangura and Tatenda Tumba are some of the stars in the team, as well as Dynamos’ King Nasama and Ngezi Platinum goalkeeper, Nelson Chadya.

Young Warriors coach, Mandla Mpofu has also called up midfielder, Patrick Musaka, who plays his club football in South Africa for Black Leopards, alongside Denzel Khumalo. Bukhosi Sibanda, who helped Bantu Rovers to championship success, is also part of the team.

Zimbabwe were drawn against Zambia and Malawi in the tournament, which takes place from December 7 to 16.

The Young Warriors are among the most successful teams in the history of the competition, winning it six times, the last time being when they beat hosts South Africa 3-0 in the final in 2007.

They reached the semi-finals three years ago in Lesotho, but fell on penalties to South Africa ending the competition in fourth place. Zambia are the most successful team in the regional tournament.
