Zimuto, who picked up a cash prize of $500 for winning the race, clocked 30:57:65, failing to beat last year’s record of 30:36:40 held by Kevin Pangiso, .

Wellington Varevi of Black Rhinos finished second in 31:04:87.

Zimuto was shoulder-to-shoulder with Varevi for the better part of the course, but gathered pace to outrun his challenger in the last kilometre.

“It was not easy, we kept the same pace with Varevi. It was tough, but I managed to outpace him towards the end in the last stretch. Otherwise the course was just smooth,” Zimuto said.

Varevi, who picked up the $300 second prize, congratulated Zimuto. He said he began to lag behind when it mattered most.

Hwange Athletics Club athlete, Phatisa Ngwabi came a distant third, finishing in 32:11:81.

In the senior women race, Patience Murowe of the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services came first in 36:56:07 and also failing to beat last year’s record of 34:54:23 set by Rutendo Nyahora.

“The route was flat, but it was too hot. We started very late,” Murowe, who received $500 as prize mony, said. In second place was Anne Chirisa of ZRP Bulawayo, who crossed the finishing line in 42:20:70, followed by Linet Tomu, who finished in 49:28:57 to walk away with $200.

In the junior men’s category, it was Courage Chiveza of Ruvhuli Secondary School in Masvingo, who clocked 32:15:00 and claimed the first prize of $150, while Dumo Mkhwananzi of Sparrows in Bulawayo came second. The third prize of $50 went to Lovejoy Kapfudza.

It was a Ruvhuli school affair in junior women’s section with Raviro Magomo, Merjury Mugari and Catherine Toringa finishing first second and third, respectively.

In the women’s wheelchair category, Magare Pangajena who clocked 40:11:80 to win the race, while Thandiwe Ndlovu came second.

Proprietor of Liquor Hub, who sponsor the race, donated $5 000 to Ethandweni Children’s Home in Kezi.
