Rumbidzai Gora was not asked to plead to the theft charge when she appeared before Gweru magistrate Judith Taruvinga on Friday.

She was remanded out of custody on $200 bail to today.

Allegations are that between January and November this year, Gora received $84 840 in tuition fees, but only banked $35 915 and converted $46 286 to her own use.

The alleged scam was only unearthed last month during an internal audit conducted by the private college, leading to her arrest.

In an unrelated incident, a 34-year-old Gweru man was on Friday sentenced to an effective 13-month jail term for stealing two 750ml bottles of cane spirits worth $5,50 each from a local supermarket.

Tawanda Sithole, a habitual pickpocket from Riverside suburb was nabbed as he walked out of the supermarket with the loot hidden in his trouser pockets.
