In a statement on Friday, NSSA chairman Robin Vela said this had nothing to do with the authority restructuring its board.

“On an unrelated development, the chief social security officer, Chikova, has decided to enter into a voluntary separation agreement with the authority with effect from January 31, 2017, after 22 years of service,” he said.

Chikova served as the NSSA acting general manager before the current substantive one, Elizabeth Chitiga, who will continue to serve in that role.

The board has recently conducted a skills audit of the authority’s personnel, and embarked on the second phase of its restructuring exercise focussed on middle management at NSSA.

The exercise has affected 13 individuals and posts, whose incumbents have been advised and will cease to represent NSSA with immediate effect.

“Negotiations, in line with retrenchment laws, are underway. A handover process has been done to ensure service delivery is not compromised. The latest restructuring is part of a continuing process that began in October 2015,” Vela said.

“The board also approved a voluntary separation, which is open to all willing employees of the authority. A formal notice will be issued in this regard by the general manager shortly.”

Vela said the board recognised that these were painful measures, but necessary ones for the sustained viability in an increasingly challenging operating environment.

He said “the authority’s goal remains to deliver a living pension to its pensioners”.
