In an interview with Southern Eye on Friday, NBSZ Matabeleland region public relations officer, Sifundo Ngwenya said the region was targeting to collect up to 1 000 units of blood for use during the festive season.

“We appeal to the communities around the country to come and donate blood, as we are moving towards the festive season. If, as a region, we can be able to collect between 700 and 1 000 units of blood, we might be covered for the festive season,” he said.

The festive season in Zimbabwe has been characterised by road carnages resulting in many people losing a lot of blood and their lives.

Ngwenya said they needed a lot of blood, especially that of blood group O, which can be used universally to patients of other blood groups.

He implored community leaders around the country to encourage young people to donate blood and save lives.

“We also encourage adults to come in their numbers and donate. We have Form 4 and 6 students, who failed to donate blood because of their examinations, we also encourage them to come and donate,” Ngwenya said.

He urged motorists to exercise extreme caution during the coming festive season to avoid unnecessary loss of lives. Ngwenya said the NBSZ will roll out a blood donation campaign starting from December 7.

He also encouraged individuals and the corporate world to assist with cash and other means to keep the blood bank stable.
