Joram Jowa of Rakata Village, under Chief Svosve in Marondera, committed the crime alongside Signal Kolowa, who was recently sentenced to 10 years in jail.

Kolowa, who lost his left arm during the theft, pleaded guilty and implicated Jowa as the mastermind of the deal. Jowa pleaded not guilty, but was nailed due to overwhelming evidence.

According to court papers, on August 24, this year, at around 9:30pm, Jowa connived with Kolowa and proceeded to Chiparahwe Farm armed with a wheel spanner, shifting spanner and a plier.

Upon arrival the convicts cut down the 11KVA electric copper line that supply electricity to the farm using the pliers.

During the process, Kolowa who was cutting was then shocked by electricity resulting in Jowa fleeing from scene thinking that his partner had been killed. Jowa, however, realised that Kolowa was alive and told him that he should tell the nurses at the nearby clinic that he sustained burns from boiling water.

The matter was reported to police after the medical staff at Chiparahwe Clinic where Kolowa had gone to seek medical attention concluded that the burns were not a result of boiling water but electricity. Investigations by police led to the arrest of Kolowa who implicated Jowa. Police recovered 150m of copper cables , shifting spanner, pliers and a wheel spanner at the scene of the crime.

Kolowa was then taken to Chitungwiza General Hospital where he had his hand amputated due to the seriousness of the injuries obtained he sustained from the electric shock.

The complainant, Innocent Munemo, a Zesa official, valued the stolen cables at $900.

Lovemore Musariyarwa prosecuted.
