The shoe firm donated the machines in March as part of its empowerment programmes, in compliance with the country’s indigenisation laws.

The machines were de-commissioned from the shoe firm’s factory and are part of the company’s expansion of its Associated Business Units (ABUs) in supporting indigenous people set up small to medium industries.

Youth, Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment minister Patrick Zhuwao, hailed the partnership saying it was bringing practical experience to students.

“This is an impressive partnership and I am informed that the provision of sewing machines at the centre has increased production to 1 000 sandals every two weeks through a sub-contracting arrangement,” Zhuwao said at the institution’s graduation and prize giving ceremony recently.

Through the arrangement Bata provides training to students on how to manufacture shoes. The company then buys the finished products allowing the institution to raise revenue.

Last year, the shoe manufacturer set up shoe manufacturing equipment at Mupfure Vocational Training Centre near Chegutu.
