The institution’s public relations officer, Sibusisiwe Ndlovu told Southern Eye yesterday that US-based Free to Smile Foundation team is in Bulawayo to conduct cleft lip operations free of charge.

“Free to Smile Foundation from the US is at the Mpilo Hospital to assist patients with cleft lip complications. We are still appealing for patients to come because their services are free,” Ndlovu said.

Ndlovu said they have started screening patients.

“The programme will run until Friday. However, we encourage people to come between now and Thursday,” she said.

All those who are in need should come to the hospital where they will be able to be examined, she said.

Ndlovu, however, said patients with cleft palate are not included in this programme.

The team hopes to provide between 30 and 40 patients with the gift of a free smile.

Cleft lip and cleft palate are facial and oral malformations that occur very early in pregnancy while the baby is developing inside the womb.

According to doctors, clefting occurs when there was not enough tissue in the mouth or lip area and the tissue available does not join together properly.
