What mothers can teach their sons

Opinion & Analysis
I AM not sure what most mothers teach their sons these days. I hear a lot of negative stuff around and see a lot of terrified mothers, who are even afraid of their sons.

Mothers should teach their sons on the dangers of drunkenness, womanising and injustice
Mothers should teach their sons on the dangers of drunkenness, womanising and injustice

If our pillows would talk, they would tell of serious pains and regrets and groans that most of us, as parents, can only tell to our pillows.

I realise that in a dispensation like ours, most parents are not sure of what to say or teach their children. They are not sure who teaches who and what to teach. There is always a conflict arising when it comes to these issues.

Many believe it is only the father who should teach the children and the mother just reinforces or does nothing. They might be right, but I need us to understand today that there are things only a mother, a wise mother, can teach to her sons and there are things only a wise father can teach to his daughters.

In a way, both parents are responsible for teaching children various issues. Today, I just want to highlight to you what wise mothers can teach to their sons. While they are growing up and running around mama, do not just enjoy that, but teach and what do you teach?

We have three key issues that we learn from King Lemuel’s mother in Proverbs 31: King Lemuel himself is telling us what his mother taught him. This teaching stuck with him and maybe that is why he became king.

Very little is known about Lemuel and his mother, but they give us a model of what a mother can teach to her sons and they also show the effects this kind of teaching has on the son and their future. Let me show you the three areas that a mother in these last days can dwell on and train her sons. It is a great mother in this life who would warn her son against these.

Womanising

Proverbs 31:2: “Do not give your strength to women nor your ways to that which destroys kings.” What a warning coming from a loving mother.

We live in times where womanising is regarded as status and a great achievement. Most cultures embrace this and decorate it as a way of being a man. For one to be classified as a real man, he should be a man of women. This is very sad indeed. King Lemuel’s mother, who loved her son so much, took time to warn him against womanising.

I am sure she went into detail as to what it does to you and your dreams. It does not only wear down your strength, but also eats into your soul and brings kings down. How many times have you heard of great men up there, falling on this one trap?

Many have been victims, never to recover again. Maybe our mothers can make sense to our sons by warning them on these. Women understand the dangers of this better than men. When a mother takes time to teach on this, it has impact.

Drinking

Proverbs 31: 4-7: The mother narrates to her son the evils of drinking. It is not for kings, great people, and wise people to drink intoxicating drinks. And yet today, drinking and being drunk is a snare for our young, both male and female. Drinking is regarded as a game for the rich and the clever and the serious. Just look at the deception of it all.

Drinking is for those perishing. Drinking is for those bitter at heart. They do it to hide and forget their sorrows. It is not for the serious in life and for the wise. If again our mothers could teach their sons against the dangers of drunkenness, the better for them all. Drunkenness has become an iniquity in families. It has got to be stopped and one clear way of doing that is for mothers to teach their sons while they are with them.

Injustice

Lemuel’s mother shows him how unjust kings become when they are drunk. Drinking leads to injustice. They drink and forget the law and pervert justice for all the people. Justice in the world has suffered a lot in the hands of drunken rulers and leaders.

At home, fathers are drunk. In politics, leaders are drunk. In business, leaders are drunk. In culture, they are drunk. In civil society, they are drunk. The results are the same, injustice to all.

The mother’s lap is the most recommended school for sons in these three areas, womanising, drinking and injustice.

My thinking and my suggestion is parents should have time to teach children about these things. Warn your children about these things. I mean let us face it, womanising, drinking and injustice are the most common three evils affecting our society today. We can minimise these if we were deliberate at home and taught and gave wisdom. I am praying to God always to raise in this generation wise parents, who stay in the word of God and have knowledge of things; parents who love teaching their children and warning them on the dangers of this world.

These kinds of teachings can save the lives of our youths, who have destroyed themselves in the temporary and misleading pleasures of these three deceptions.

Maybe, as families, we can make these three our syllabuses and begin to teach. Maybe, you did not know what to teach to your child, let this help you. Just get started and pray for your sons and daughters. Mothers teach the sons on these. Fathers teach your daughters too on these.

Fight for your family. Fight for your sons and daughters. We are living in perilous times. If it is possible, be like a Noah and get all your family members to the Kingdom of God. These are times to be serious.
