Foreign Affairs ministry permanent secretary, Joey Bimha yesterday confirmed Mugabe would be travelling to the island nation. “Yes, the President is travelling to Cuba, that is why Cabinet was held today (yesterday),” he said.

Mugabe’s spokesperson, George Charamba was not available for comment.

Mugabe, now 92, along with other former guerilla leaders particularly from the Southern African region, received support from Cuba during their various struggles against colonialism. Castro also helped Zimbabwe’s Education for All Programme in the early years of independence, with training of teachers as well as in the health sector.
