Irked by being denied food and water for a whole day after some of them had walked long distances to attend the youth league inter-district meeting, the youths had no kind words to the provincial leadership.

But Manicaland Provincial minister Mandi Chimene was quick to remind them that while she was not happy with youths going hungry, going without food was the kind of life they were exposed to during the liberation struggle.

“We also used to suffer from hunger; hunger should not be in charge of you. So if someone comes with sadza, you will go there regardless of who it is? Yes, I heard there is no water and food. These days things are tough, the economy is not good, but this issue can always be rectified. However, I am happy with the attendance,” she said.

Chimene’s made the remarks after Zanu PF Manicaland youth chairman, Mubuso Chinguno said: “Minister, we are here, we didn’t have water or food for the entire day, some walked long distances to this place (Mutare Polytechnic).”

Chinguno said the youths would not take kindly MPs and ministers, who marginalise and ill-treat youths, urging the youths, who he said constituted 65% of the population to contest for leadership positions ahead of the 2018 general elections.

He urged the youths to challenge the siting MPs in all the province’s 26 constituencies. “What I can say is, as youths, we constitute 65% of the population, so I am encouraging you to contest from ward level in 2018, we don’t support the marginalising and ill-treatment of youths in the province,’’ he said.
