Generally, the manager defines goals and takes necessary steps to ensure that these goals can be achieved in an efficient manner. Planning reflects vision, foresight and wisdom. Thus, it is the blueprint of action and operation.

The year 2016 business calendar is almost gone, what we are waiting for is the New Year. What is certainly true about next year is that it is going to be difficult to plan considering the election preparation activities and atmosphere. Therefore, organisations have to be fully aware of the strategy and structure of planning that they are going to implement. Business success is an end product of extensive planning expressed clearly in right form, model and structure. The great accomplishments and achievements that most businesspeople and companies enjoy today was once ideas that started by being presented on paper and acted on with great tenacity and commitment.

A better business planning today is a better business tomorrow. Well-defined business goals that are well-polished with effective understanding of the business environment and fuelled by great desire and commitment are achievable.

The starting point of business success is the starting point of organisational planning. Business goals that are well-decorated on paper and are dressed according to time causes a smooth ride on the path to organisational success.

How far a business person reaches in his/her career is a compliment of how far he/she is willing to plan. Well-structured objectives are an intangible form of victory that adequately requires effective strategies and tactics.

Business goals that are reduced to writing (plan) make the journey to success a memorable one. A mind that is well-accommodated by the future is the mindset that has already offloaded a plan on paper, not the one which has not.

Business goals are what an organisation is trying to accomplish through its activities, offering and actions. Goal setting is critical to effective time and stress management strategies. Take responsibility of your life, make yourself accountable as a leader, for all events either unforeseen or controllable. Smart (specific, measurable, assignable and time-related) goals are the blueprints of the objectives along with the steps you will take to achieve your goals in business. Your achievement in business and career is determined, to a larger extent, by your ability to plan, decide and take action. The stronger your skills in each areas, the faster you achieve your goals as a leader.

Goal setting can operate to enhance both intrinsic motivation (in the absence of any extrinsic rewards) and extrinsic motivation (when workers are given extrinsic rewards, for achieving their goals). Proper goals setting is important for the following reasons.

Firstly nothing happens in business without planning. Sound planning ensures that business executives establish long term objectives, start business ventures, discover scientific approaches and advances. Where there is no proper planning in every organisation definitely nothing of substance happens.

Secondly nothing succeeds in business without planning. Proper planning allows leaders develop ideas; carry out endeavours, and keep project going. The abandonment of some projects which are going on is a sign of absence of appropriate planning. When leaders are so passive when it comes to planning no projects are carried out. Planning allows a leader to be innovative and creative so that new ideas are developed.

Thirdly, nothing advances in business without planning. Effective planning allows business leaders to be enterprising and forward-looking. They will be more eager to enhance organisational quality and reputation through improved efficiency, greater conveniences, reliability and the introduction of new products and services through planning.

Lastly, nothing is/gets corrected in business without planning. To fix errors and solve problems, leaders have to take responsibility of planning to ensure that the relevant adjustment is made. Planning helps business leaders to make a course correction when they have veered onto a destructive path. The ability to take responsibility when needed is a key feature of an immaculate leader who knows how to plan. The leader’s desire to grow is measured by the rate at which he/she is willing to take planning responsibility.
